Biological Invasions

Bursaries available for 2012

2 x Hons; 3 x MSc; 1 x PhD; 1 x Post-doc

Several bursaries are available to conduct research on various aspects of managing new invasions as part of the Working for Water / South African National Biodiversity Institute Early Detection and Rapid Response Programme.

A range of projects are available potentially involving molecular phylogenetics, GIS mapping, taxonomy, population modelling, social science, history, mathematical ecology, and evolutionary biology. Submitted topics in line with EDRR's goals will also be considered.

Requirements: Candidates must be pro-active, enthusiastic, and interested in doing excellent research that can make a difference.

Bursary Values (to cover living expenses and university fees)

                Honours/4th year undergraduate R 30, 000 p.a. for 1 year

                Masters R 60,000 p.a. for 2 years

                Doctoral R 90,000 p.a. for 3 years

                Post-doctoral R150,000 p.a. for 2 years

Project running expenses will be covered separately and will vary depending on the project. Where the candidate is based and registered will also depend on the project and candidate.

Student bursaries are open to all South African citizens, and post-doctoral research bursaries are open to anyone who has completed their PhD in the last five years. Honours students will also need to apply separately to a university honours programme.

Application procedure: Each application is to be accompanied by a standard cover-sheet. Applications are to include a full CV; certified copies of ID and academic record; two letters of reference; for Hons. a one page statement of interest in invasion biology; and for MSc, PhD, post-docs a two-page project outline. Send all documents to students at sanbi.org.za with “EDRR studentships” in the subject line. Applications close 4 November 2011, and successful candidates will be notified by mid November.
