Dr Leslie contacted Norman and about finding a student for the project described below. If you are nearing the end of your degree and think you might be interested, you can contact Dr Leslie directly. Regards, Jason ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *From:*Dr Alison Leslie [mailto:aleslie at sun.ac.za] *Sent:* Thursday, August 08, 2013 5:32 PM *To:* Norman Owen-Smith *Subject:* Gooday Norman... Greetings from a very warm, southern Malawi. Sure hope all is well with you? I believe you have heard via the grapevine (a PhD student of mine who contacted you) that I am currently running a research programme in Majete Wildlife Reserve in Malawi. A phenomenal re-introduction programme over the past 10 years and we are now getting a monitoring/research programme up and running. 2500 individuals of 14 species have been re-introduced including elephants, black rhino, buffalo, sable, lion, leopard etc. This is an African Parks initiative. We have also recently, via camera traps, discovered what we think is a pretty healthy population of hyenas. My student who contacted you, Colin Tucker, has decided that the PhD is not for him after all, so I am on the hunt for some good quality students/or postdoc. As we know these days, they can be hard to come by!! I would really like someone to continue the buffalo/sable work and wonder if you have any ideas. I believe that the elephants and buffalo are going to become a management nightmare, and we have actually already shown in an MSc thesis that elephants are causing a considerable amount of damage. The park is 70 000ha in size and fully fenced - electric. There are 9 artificial waterholes and a number of natural springs, 4 of which are perennial. Much of the park is also high altitude, transitional (??) miombo woodland and a portion has the DShire River as a boundary. It is virtually a living lab as we know what was re-introduced. We have a stunning research camp with en suite accommodation and now even internet access, I feed all and provide 2 vehicles, we have camera traps available etc etc etc. The majority of funding is coming from the Earthwatch Ins. - and we run 8 volunteer teams a year. Students would only be required to source their own bursary funds. Please let me know if you have any really reliable students up your sleeve!! Kind regards, Elma *Social-Ecological Risk, Vulnerability and Adaptations to Climate Change in the Garden Route* This three-year programme is a collaboration between leading social and ecological scientists at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and CSIR, South Africa, University of Exeter in the UK, Arizona State University and CIRAD, IRSTEA and CFE in France. We wish to assess actual and perceived risk, vulnerability, and adaptation to climate change, and social learning in three regions: the Garden Route coast in South Africa; the Languedoc-Rousillon in France; and Cornwall in the UK. The project addresses four research issues: *Risk and adaptation* 1.How do risk due to climate change; adaptive capacity; human perceptions of risk and adaptability; and access to capacity-enhancing resources influence the adaptive actions and strategies of decision makers? *Vulnerability* 2.How do such adaptations unintentionally affect the vulnerability of external groups, places or ecosystem services? *Feedback, reflection and action* 3.Which feedbacks occur when people engage in social learning through reflective practice and critical inquiry? *Behavioral change and transformation* 4.How do perceptions of risk and adaptive capacity change when decision makers are actively involved in, learn and reflect, in a process of situated social learning? *Opportunities for involvement* Opportunities exist for prospective Doctoral, post-Doctoral and Master's students to be part of an international consortium that will collaboratively address these issues. Prospective students are encouraged to develop their own topics around the above themes. Examples of topics include: ?*Stakeholder engagement through participatory research to promote awareness, social learning and ecosystem stewardship in select catchments in the Southern Cape.* ?*Risk perceptions and adaptation strategies of farmers, foresters and conservationists in the Garden Route. * ?*The intended and unintended consequences of adaptations to risk and vulnerability in the Garden Route.* ?*Resilience theory to map areas of risk and vulnerability to climate change along the Garden Route coast.* ?*Combining empirical and participatory modeling techniques to assess risk and vulnerability of social-ecological systems in the Garden Route.* In addition to competitive bursaries, participants will have extraordinary opportunities to develop international networks and contacts and share in the expertise of leading global sustainability specialists. Students will be based in the Sustainability Research Unit at NMMU's George Campus at Saasveld. Please contact Prof Christo Fabricius, christo.fabricius at nmmu.ac.za by 30 September 2013, and feel free to visit the Sustainability Research Unit web site www.nmmu.ac.za/sru. Prospective students can join any time between September 2013 and February 2014. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ NOTICE: Please note that this eMail, and the contents thereof, is subject to the standard NMMU eMail disclaimer which may be found at: http://www.nmmu.ac.za/disclaimer/email.htm -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Southern African Wildlife Management Association (SAWMA)" group.
