Hi

I have a research programme sampling aspects of Biodiversity in the Malolotja to Kruger corridor. I am looking for assistants to help with this sampling. The following are the dates:

The next event will comprise a course on tree identification from early on Monday 28 April to midday on Tuesday 29 April. On the afternoon of 29 April, we will talk about Whittaker plots, how to do them and what results one obtains. From the morning of 30 April, we will be undertaking Whittaker plots and doing general collecting in the northern part of the Malolotja to Kruger corridor until the evening of Friday 4 April. For this event, we will be staying at Pullen Nature Reserve. For those attending the tree course and staying at Pullen, we would like you to arrive on Sunday afternoon. For those wanting to participate in the collecting only, we would like you to arrive on Tuesday afternoon. You are welcome to stay at Pullen until the morning of Saturday 5 May. Please let me know soon if you intend to participate, so that we can make appropriate logistical arrangements and give you further details. You are welcome to pass this invitation on to anyone who would be willing to assist with this collection of Biodiversity data or would be interested in attending the tree identification course.

The tree identification course is based on one that we have been offering on the Witwatersrand for many years. We will teach terminology and the technique of keying and will initially use the key we have developed for the Witwatersrand, Magaliesberg and Pilanesberg. We will then graduate on to the key in Trees and Shrubs of Mpumalanga and the Kruger National Park.

For Pullen Farm, we will be staying in the accommodation and you will need to bring your own bedding although comfortable beds are provided. We can accommodate up to 30 people. Locals are welcome to travel in for the times that suit them.

Future Events (please diarise the dates) will include the following in addition to collecting:

8 - 16 July Course on Mammal Identification by Charlene Bissett at Pullen Nature Reserve and then sampling from Barberton Mountainlands

10 - 18 Oct Pullen Nature Reserve - Identification of Plant families and how to make good herbarium specimens

7 - 9 Nov Pullen Nature Reserve for course - Insect identification and how to preserve and pin insects by James Harrison and others AND 9 - 15 Nov Barberton Mountainlands for collecting

12 - 20 Dec Pullen Nature Reserve - Reptile Identification and sampling by Bryan Maritz

For Pullen Nature Reserve one needs to bring own bedding, towels and so on, but beds are available in comfortable accommodation. For Barberton Mountainlands, it is best to bring a tent and camping gear.

Duties will include collecting and preserving specimens of insects and any other groups in which you are interested and assisting Kruger to Canyons Ecological Monitors to collect and preserve specimens. A driving licence is essential. Payment will be at TA rates.

Please provide a CV and a motivation to be considered.

Kind Regards

Kevin
