This fixed-term contract position has opened at the Association for Water and Rural Development (AWARD), an NGO based in Hoedspruit, Limpopo Province. The person who fills this position will form part of the AWARD team working on the USAID Resilience in the Limpopo River Basin Programme: Olifants (RESILIM-O), which aims to reduce vulnerability (of natural resources) through building improved trans-boundary governance and management of the Olifants Catchment so as to enhance the resilience of its people and ecosystems through systemic and social learning approaches. The focus is on water and biodiversity.

Job Purpose:

To facilitate climate-change adaptation (including risk and vulnerability) in the Olifants Basin through:

  *   Action research and stakeholder engagement;
  *   The synthesis of multiple research efforts; and
  *   Contributing to systemic resilience analysis.
Tasks and Responsibilities:

  *   Facilitate research outputs of senior researchers from collaborating institutions;
  *   Synthesise climate change, vulnerability and risk assessment as part of a systemic resilience analysis;
  *   Participate in collaborative research;
  *   Perform certain research tasks independently;
  *   Adoption of social learning approaches to strengthening adaptation and resilience building.
Qualifications, Experience and Key Competencies:

  *   PhD preferable;
  *   Relevant background and experience in socio-ecological-systems, with subjects such as geography, vulnerability and risks, climate change adaptation, systems thinking;
  *   Knowledge of water and biodiversity sectors;
  *   Knowledge of spatial data analysis and good facilitation skills.
The following key competencies are required for this post:

  *   Action research and implementation experience in management of climate- change and variability related risks;
  *   Ideally have a proven ability to deal with complexity and familiarity with systems thinking resilience theories;
  *   Play a synthesising role, advantage if incumbent can exhibit a minimum of 5 years’ experience on large projects;
  *   Familiar with multiple drivers and attributes of change, impacts on natural resources and livelihoods;
  *   Experience in participatory systemic approaches;
  *   Good interpersonal skills and ability to engage with a wide range of stakeholders, sectors and partners;
  *   Adaptability and willingness to travel;
  *   Teamwork and collaboration;
  *   Proven computer literacy (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, GIS);
  *   Good planning and project skills;
  *   Fluency in English (read, write, understand)
  *   Preference to persons that have experience in working in an NGO environment;
  *   Valid driver’s licence (EB).
