Applications are invited for the post of Consortium Manger for the 
African Climate and Development Initiative (ACDI).  The ACDI is a 
strategic initiative at UCT that coordinates and enhances research and 
teaching in climate and climate change across departments and faculties. 
  From Jan 2014 to Dec 2018, ACDI will be leading a multi-partner, CAD$ 
13.5 Million research project, ASSAR (Adaptation at Scale in Semi-Arid 
Regions).  ASSAR is a part of a larger multi-consortium research 
programme, CARIAA (Collaborative Adaptation Research in Africa and Asia) 
funded by IDRC and DFID.

The ASSAR project will be managed via a Consortium Management Unit (CMU) 
at ACDI, which will be responsible for coordination of cross-consortia 
activities: research, reporting, outputs, and interactions with external 
bodies such as the consortium advisory board and the CARIAA management 
team at IDRC.

The main purpose of the Consortium Manager Position is to lead the CMU, 
under the direction of the ACDI Director (who is the ASSAR project PI). 
  The role includes all aspects of senior level consortium management, 
including oversight of research activities, financial reporting, 
monitoring and evaluation, ensuring project deliverables and activities 
from all project partners are on track, organisational and human 
resources management and information management. The incumbent will need 
to develop and maintain excellent, efficient, robust, viable and 
friendly management, finance, staffing, information and administrative 
systems.

Requirements include:

. Minimum of a Master's degree in a field relevant to climate change 
vulnerability, impacts and adaptation

. At least 3 years' experience in the research or science administration 
field, demonstrating a broad knowledge and understanding of financial 
and management principles, with proven analytical, and interpretive 
abilities.

. Project management experience, involving multiple collaborating entities.

. Staff management experience.

. Interpersonal, organisational, team working and communication skills.

. Fundamental skills: Report writing; Ability to read and synthesize 
research papers and reports, Computer literacy (including MS Office 
suite; e-mail; web-content management, financial accounting).

. Willingness and flexibility to frequently travel in Africa and Asia.

The following would be advantageous:

. Qualification (or equivalent practical experience) in project and/or 
office management

. Previous experience in climate change research project management

. Proficiency in SAP or equivalent accounting package; Familiarity with 
MS-Project or equivalent package.

. Familiarity with a tertiary education environment.

. Project management skills applied in a research environment.
