Applications must be completed and submitted at https://nrfsubmission.nrf.ac.za
The first field of the application has all the call documents attached. Please download and read before continuing with the application.

Key eligibility criteria:

 Applicants must be South African citizens. Permanent residents may apply (for PhD funding) only if they are employed in an academic capacity at a higher education institution.

 Applicants must have obtained a minimum accumulative grade average of 65% (calculating all undergraduate marks for masters) and includes honours marks for PhD.

 Applicants’ last qualification should not be obtained longer than six years prior to year of application.

 Humanities applications will be considered if the research has a development related focus.

 Applicants who already hold a qualification for the level of funding they are applying for are not eligible.

 The scholarship must not be held simultaneously with a bursary/scholarship from any other NRF source, NRF administered source, and DAAD administered source or other government sources without prior NRF / DAAD permission.

Submitted applications will be routed to the institutional authority. In the case of Wits, to Waheeda Bala. Only applications meeting the DAAD criteria will be submitted to the NRF. This is competitive funding so submission to the NRF does not guarantee an award.
