The NRE has a vacancy for a Candidate Researcher (Environmental Scientist) in the Global Change Competence Area. The Competence Area focus seeks to advance the understanding of the land, ocean and atmosphere continuum, through improved observation capacity of these three Earth systems. The candidate will contribute to the Competence Area?s climate studies, modelling and environmental health research group focus area of regional air quality modelling and environmental health and work in a large multidisciplinary project team and individually when necessary. The job focuses on exploring the links and feedbacks between climate change and air quality, and research aimed at understanding the potential health risks from both a changing climate and poor air quality. This position will provide an opportunity to grow technical and research skills; as well as knowledge in the field of air quality, climate change and environmental health. The position is based in Pretoria. Key Responsibilities: * Assist on several large and dynamic projects simultaneously with assistance of a senior researcher; * Investigate current knowledge in the fields of air quality, climate change and environmental health through peer reviewed literature; * Analysis and visualisation of large environmental datasets; * Analyse atmospheric model outputs; and * Assist senior researchers in directed research in the areas of air quality, climate change, and environmental health. Qualifications, Skills and Experience * Master?s degree in geography or related fields such as environmental science, meteorology, or in the natural sciences; * Experience in air quality and/or climate change research; * Demonstrate ability to independently research new topics through literature reviews; * Experience of 1-2 years in analysing large environmental datasets; * Experience in using GIS would be an advantage; * Experience in climate modelling or regional air quality modelling will be an advantage; * Interest in project work related to air quality and climate change, and the resultant health impacts; and * The ideal candidate should be enthusiastic and self-motivated individual who takes ownership and initiative.
