Listeria monocytogenes associated with recall of stone fruits in the US

PulseNet USA is with FDA following up on a recall of stone fruit (peaches, nectarines, plums and pluots) processed by the Wawona Packing Co. in California because of contamination of with Listeria monocytogenes.

The information has been shared through INFOSAN but we would like to share it through the PulseNet web-forum, too, because of the broad distribution of the products.

We are following up on clinical cases in the US but so far we have not conclusively identified any cases related to the recall.

We would very much like to know if any PulseNet member has cases of listeriosis that could be related to the outbreak. Attached is a TIFF file with the PFGE pattern of the strain isolated from the product. The AscI pattern is in lane 2 and the AscI pattern in lane 6. Also attached is a PulseNet BioNumerics bundle file with the patterns.

The information posted on INFOSAN is:

?FDA would like to make you aware of an ongoing recall of fresh, whole peaches, plums, nectarines, and pluots due to the potential of the products being contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

On July 19, 2014, Wawona Packing Company of Cutler, California, voluntarily recalled certain lots of whole peaches (white and yellow), nectarines (white and yellow), plums and pluots packed between June 1, 2014 through July 12,2014 due to the potential of the products being contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. On July  31, Wawona Packing Company expanded their recall to cover all products packed in the Wawona Packing Co. facility from June 1, 2014 through July 17, 2014. Products packed on or after July 18 outside of the Wawona Packing Co. facility are not affected by this recall.

FDA has notified the following countries that have received recalled products: Austria, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala , Hong Kong S.A.R., Honduras, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Philippines, Singapore, and Taiwan.
