Subject: Continuation of the Global Sewage Surveillance project

Dear Colleague

The Research Group of Genomic Epidemiology at DTU Food led by Frank Aarestrup are seeking potential collaborators for the continuation of the Global Sewage Surveillance project using the metagenomics approach. The Research Group has secured national funding to cover sequencing and analysis expenses to continue the project with the support from also the World Health Organization. http://novonordiskfonden.dk/en/content/analysing-wastewater-100-countries-reduce-antibiotic-resistance We wish to collect 2L of urban sewage four time in the study period, two times in 2017 and two time in 2018 from major cities around the world. The target is to enroll more than 100 countries and multiple cities within each country. (read more about the pilot project of which this is a continuation http://www.compare-europe.eu/Library/Global-Sewage-Surveillance-Project )

We seek potential collaborators for the June 2017 trial to;

· Collect at a given week, a representative urban sewage sample of 2 L from the city’s main sewage pipe prior to inlet to the treatment plant.

o The expected sampling months: June 2017, November 2017, June 2018, and November 2018 (sign up for all trials is possible).

· Temporary store the sample till the shipping has been organized.

· Capture an digital image of the sampling spot.

· Note the GPS position of the sampling site.

· Fill in a survey to capture metadata related to the sample.

As organizer, DTU will subsequently;

· Select among interested collaborators those that provide the best coverage of the region.

· Provide a full description of sampling handling.

· Provide sample containers and packaging material for UN3373 Biological Substance Cat.B (IATA packing instruction 650) if needed.

· Cover shipping costs via FedEx or DHL.

· Conduct whole community sequencing of the collected sewage samples.

·        Conduct the data analysis.

In case this has triggered your curiosity, you are welcome to read more about the pilot project and the grant description via the provided links.

Should you want to potentially collaborate – then please indicate your interest in participation as well as what country, city to sample, and if you need packaging material and to obtain a permit (Please consider a permit to cover all four iterations). Please reply before Monday the 24th of February. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/GlobalSewageSignUp2017 <https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/GlobalSewageSignUp2017> (Survey questions attached)

Please send this invitation to other colleagues in your country or networks who might be interested to join.

Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any additional questions but please be patience if I don’t reply the same day. You are also more than welcome to read about the Global Sewage pilot project http://www.compare-europe.eu/Library/Global-Sewage-Surveillance-Project

Cheers
