See information below, including the survey : https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/X7GT6LZ_FF-contact-list Dr. Anthony Smith Principal Medical Scientist Centre for Enteric Diseases (Bacteriology Division) National Institute for Communicable Diseases South Africa E-mail: anthonys at nicd.ac.za Tel: +27-11-5550348 | Cell: +27-83-4612145 Website: www.nicd.ac.za Dear Technical Leads of the Fleming Fund Country Grantees, AMR Chairperson of the FF country grant, and other institutions in the African region having access to WGS capacity In 2019, the Technical University of Denmark (DTU Food) was awarded a Fleming Fund Regional Grant and tasked to establish and support regional sequencing centres for East, West and Southern Africa. The objectives are to develop and support whole genome sequencing (WGS) and bioinformatics capacity for AMR surveillance in Fleming Fund countries in Africa. Three sites have been identified to serve as regional sequencing centres for East, West and Southern Africa: the Kilimanjaro Clinical Research Institute (KCRI), Moshi, Tanzania by Blandina Theophil Mmbaga; National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), Centre for Enteric Diseases (Bacteriology Division) in Johannesburg, South Africa by Anthony Smith; and the University of Ibadan (UI), Ibadan, Nigeria by Iruka N. Okeke. Furthermore, the consortium is also being networked with by Africa CDC. The regional WGS reference centres will serve the Fleming Fund countries with WGS support as well as launch targeted pilot projects to provide more evidence on infectious diseases and AMR in the region. The aim of reaching out to you with this email is also to establish a functional network to facilitate the WGS support and disseminate relevant information. Thus, the plan is to send out an invitation in the first quarter of 2020 for a regional WGS training course. The objectives of the course is to learn more about WGS and bioinformatics analysis why the target audience will be molecular scientists from Fleming Fund countries and other institutions in the region which has access to in-house WGS capacity but lack bioinformatics capacity. If you wish to be part of this network and receive further information from the regional sequencing centres for East, West and Southern Africa, please sign up via the link https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/X7GT6LZ_FF-contact-list.
