From Prinisha.Badassy at wits.ac.za Mon Oct 16 22:13:19 2017 From: Prinisha.Badassy at wits.ac.za (Prinisha Badassy) Date: Mon, 16 Oct 2017 20:13:19 +0000 Subject: [Sahs] CFP: Isolation and Liberation on the Global Periphery: Diplomacy and Quasi-Diplomacy during the Rhodesian UDI era Message-ID: Call for Papers Isolation and Liberation on the Global Periphery: Diplomacy and Quasi-Diplomacy during the Rhodesian UDI era. Colloquium to be held at the University of Pretoria, June 2018 Abstract Deadline: November 1, 2017 On June 27, 2018, the Department of Historical and Heritage Studies at the University of Pretoria will host a colloquium entitled Isolation and Liberation on the Global Periphery: Diplomacy and Quasi-Diplomacy during the Rhodesian UDI era. The colloquium seeks to offer a synthetic overview of international and transnational aspects of the Rhodesian decision to 'go it alone'. This includes international support for both the Rhodesian regime and the liberation movements as well as the role of diplomacy in bringing an end to UDI. The colloquium will further consider the nature and significance of the quasi-diplomacy practiced by both Salisbury and the black Nationalists including establishment of "information offices" or missions which acted as de facto embassies for the Rhodesian Government. The colloquium will also explore the involvement of non-state actors such as business interests and political interest groups as well as the imposition, enforcement (or lack of) and circumvention of bilateral and UN sanctions. Given that the Rhodesian question encapsulated many of key global dynamics of the 1960s-70s including Cold War geopolitics, human rights and race relations, the colloquium will further examine the importance of these factors in shaping the global reaction to UDI. The colloquium would also welcome papers relating to the legacy of the UDI in shaping both the region and also future global responses to the presence of 'rogue' or 'pariah' states. The themes on which we would welcome submissions include, but are not limited to: * The international and transnational dynamics shaping the global response to UDI. * International support for Salisbury and the liberation movements. * The "Unholy Alliance": the 'pariah' politics of white minority rule on the global periphery. * Rhodesian/Nationalist diplomacy and quasi diplomacy. * International sanctions: imposition, enforcement and circumvention. * Transnational consciousness of race and racial identity. * Role played by of non-state states during the UDI era. * Global and regional legacy of the UDI. Abstract Deadline: If you are interested in presenting a paper, please send an abstract (200-300 words) to eddiemichel1 at gmail.com or thula.simpson at up.ac.za by November 1, 2017. Full papers (between 7,000 and 9,000 words excluding footnotes) of accepted abstracts will need to be submitted to history at up.ac.za by May 31,2018. These papers will be pre-circulated at the colloquium to facilitate discussion. After the colloquium, the organisers will pursue publication of the essays in the South African Historical Journal. Contributors to the colloquium are requested to make their papers available for this publication. Colloquium Organisers.
