On June 27, 2018, the Department of Historical and Heritage Studies at the University of Pretoria will host a colloquium entitled
Isolation and Liberation on the Global Periphery: Diplomacy and Quasi-Diplomacy during the Rhodesian UDI era. The colloquium seeks to offer a synthetic overview of international and transnational aspects of the Rhodesian decision to ‘go it alone’. This
includes international support for both the Rhodesian regime and the liberation movements as well as the role of diplomacy in bringing an end to UDI. The colloquium will further consider the nature and significance of the quasi-diplomacy practiced by both
Salisbury and the black Nationalists including establishment of “information offices” or missions which acted as de facto embassies for the Rhodesian Government. The colloquium will also explore the involvement of non-state actors such as business interests
and political interest groups as well as the imposition, enforcement (or lack of) and circumvention of bilateral and UN sanctions. Given that the Rhodesian question encapsulated many of key global dynamics of the 1960s-70s including Cold War geopolitics, human
rights and race relations, the colloquium will further examine the importance of these factors in shaping the global reaction to UDI. The colloquium would also welcome papers relating to the legacy of the UDI in shaping both the region and also future global
responses to the presence of ‘rogue’ or ‘pariah’ states.
