The Up-n-Running with Big Data workshop will be run in MSL005, Mathematical Sciences Laboratories, Science Stadium, this Saturday. >From Wikipedia - "Big data is a broad term for data sets so large or complex that traditional data processing applications are inadequate. Challenges include analysis, capture, data curation, search, sharing, storage, transfer, visualization, and information privacy." Big Data is currently a hot topic in Business and in Science. The workshop makes use of the R programming language, so if you?ve had some exposure to R before the workshop that will be an advantage. Watching a few YouTube tutorials on R or having attended the Up-n-Running with R workshop will be sufficient. Title: Up-n-Running with Big Data Date: Saturday, 10 October 2015 Start Time: 09:00 sharp Venue: MSL005, Mathematical Sciences Laboratories Cost: Free, but registration is essential. To register, please mail your name, surname, and student number to Siphiwe.Thwala at students.wits.ac.za. Hope to see you there. Dr. Sheldon Herbst from CSAM will be giving a talk tomorrow to our Astrophysics Interest Group on The Early Evolution of Stars. Even if you haven?t been a regular attendee in the Interest Group, please feel free to join us tomorrow at 13:15 in MSL005. It will be a good opportunity to get a sense of what kind of Astrophysics research is taking place in CSAM. Hope to see you there. She has finished programming it and is ready for any feedback from you guys. It would be awesome if the next big thing comes out of Wits just like Facebook is from Harvard! It works sort of like Instagram that people share pictures etc. The way it works is this: 1. You don't need a powerful phone to use it so anyone can access it very easily. You can use a mobile browser or computer, no need for an Android phone with the app or whatever. It works on any phone that can access the internet. The computer version of the website is also a full website, with sign up, upload etc. 2. When you upload a picture, people don't comment or like it in the usual way. You add tags or hashtags to your picture and your followers will like or confirm those hashtags. For example, if your picture is happy and beautiful, you upload it and add tags "Happy", "Beautiful". Your followers then confirm those tags and you can see the number of likes/confirmations for each tag. 3. The more confirmations your picture gets, the more it rises in ranks and earns badges that are displayed on the picture. Your picture starts off cold with a Cold Badge. As people confirm it starts getting warm and hotter and hotter. The badges are: 0 - 19 confirmations = Cold Badge 20 - 49 confirmations = Spark Badge 51 - 99 confirmations = Bonfire Badge 100+ confirmations = Supernova Badge Also you will get an idea of why people like your pics or what they think. Instead of just getting 130 Likes, you will see there are 50 confirmations on the "Happy" tag, 25 on "Beautiful", 1 on "NoFilter" etc. By the time you get to more than 100 confirmations, your picture would have been put in the rank of hot pictures. Look at the presentation, sign up, log in, upload posts and provide feedback. Let Witsies change the world! Even if you haven?t been a regular attendee in the Interest Group, please feel free to join us tomorrow at 13:15 in MSL005. Dr. Tailor's study path was interesting in that she graduated from Computational and Applied Mathematics, but pursued her PhD in the School of Physics. She therefore has a very broad view of what it's like studying at Wits. While we're meeting to talk about Astrophysics, I'm certain she'll be open to talking about her study experiences as well. Hope to see you there. MSS Team -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
