From keith at breckenridge.org.za Wed Apr 9 13:05:59 2014 From: keith at breckenridge.org.za (Keith Breckenridge) Date: Wed, 9 Apr 2014 13:05:59 +0200 Subject: [Sugarman] scheduling Message-ID: Dear colleagues, Some basic timetabling and assembling matters, for those of you who will be attending the workshop on the Global South as an Idea and a Source of Theory in Johannesburg and the Pilanesberg between May 5 and May 17. Pamila Gupta, another Wisan and UM alum, will be helping with the organisation of the workshop, so please expect to hear from her. Welcome Pamila! The details of the schedule are developing at http://wiser.wits.ac.za/global-south-idea. Please do check to see if I have your name down as a session organiser and let me know if what you see makes sense. If it doesn't please do let me know. This is important. If your name is down please do give some thought to the best possible readings, either from the existing bibliography at the bottom of the page or from somewhere else. Do let me have those. The basic timetable will be to spend May 5 to 9 in Johannesburg, for people to have free time from lunchtime on May 9 to the evening of Sunday 11. Then to travel in the afternoon directly to Bakubung Lodge in the Pilanesberg. We will stay there until the morning of Thursday May 15, returning to Wits for concluding sessions. Some of the time between May 11 and 15 will be spent exploring the platinum mines and the Tribal Authorities around them. You should know that these mines -- and over 100,000 workers -- are now into a 12 week long strike over substantial wage increases organised, not by the old NUM, but by the new union, AMCU. The conflict between NUM and AMCU forms part of the struggle that shaped the massacre at Marikana in This is the longest and largest strike in South African history. I will talk about this in some detail. May 7 is also Election Day in South Africa. And we are all very interested to see what the results of the election will be. We will meet on that day, but only in the afternoon. If you are joining us, please do let Najibha Deshmukh ( najibha.deshmukh at wits.ac.za) have your arrival and departure times. This is also important. Many thanks, Keith -- Keith Breckenridge *W I S E R* - The Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research, University of the Witwatersrand | Pbag 3, PO Wits, Johannesburg, South Africa, 2050 | Tel: +27117174272 | Fax: 0867654213 | Web: wiser.wits.ac.za -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... If people are arriving in groups we will arrange shuttles to collect you (but need your times to do that). The Gautrain from the airport is extremely efficient and reliable and well-priced; where it is possible we would like to encourage you to use it. Najibha will discuss the best options with each of you. The Mellon grant will pay for accommodation in Melville from May 4 to May 11, and then May 15 to May 17, but not before or after that. Accommodation at the Babubung Lodge in the Pilanesberg will also be covered from May 11 to 15. We cannot, alas, cover other accommodation costs. About half of the meals will be organised and non-Johannesburg participants will also be able to claim back a per diem amount (still to be determined!) for some of your meals and local transport costs. We'll say more on that shortly. But there will be constraints on the amounts involved. The readings will be available, for each session, on May 1 in a Dropbox folder. The programme is still at http://wiser.wits.ac.za/global-south-idea (it may yet change a little) and the readings (which will certainly not grow now) are at https://www.dropbox.com/sh/r9udrtlbldq50hf/Nmvjvj3soM. Note that we will only be reading short extracts from the books included in the dropbox folders. I am keen to encourage people to use Zotero to support collaboration, so if you have an existing Zotero account do, please, send it to me and we can begin to put together a group library. This is especially useful for sharing references with the group. We will not be providing printing facilities for anyone in Johannesburg, so it is important to bring a reading device with you or to do some careful printing before you arrive. Wits uses Eduroam for visitors' wireless access but we will, also, be providing uncomplicated private wireless Internet in the Wiser offices. We will shortly be sending out a list of the airport transfers and accommodation details. More soon, Keith -- Keith Breckenridge *W I S E R* - The Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research, University of the Witwatersrand | Pbag 3, PO Wits, Johannesburg, South Africa, 2050 | Tel: +27117174272 | Fax: 0867654213 | Web: wiser.wits.ac.za -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We owe huge thanks to Keith and all those at WiSER and Wits who've been laboring very hard to put an exciting program together, one that abounds with intellectual, social, and environmental treats! At the risk of being a finger-wagging nag (yes, I know you're rolling your eyes! (-:), I do want to emphasize to my UM colleagues the point that Keith has made: Wits absolutely cannot provide printing services. So please: if you need paper copies of the readings, take the time NOW to download and print them in Ann Arbor. Really. End of speech. Til soon!
