From keith at breckenridge.org.za Wed Sep 17 14:48:02 2014 From: keith at breckenridge.org.za (Keith Breckenridge) Date: Wed, 17 Sep 2014 14:48:02 +0200 Subject: [Sugarman] Progress on subthemes Message-ID: Dear all, We are approaching reporting time for Mellon. It would be useful, first of all, to have some agreement on the ways we are describing our activities. Can we use the following? * workshops for the 10 events described in the proposals, * themes for the areas of concentration that emerge from the workshops * and collaborations for pre-existing areas of t would be good to know what progress, if any has been made on the themes that emerged from the last workshop. Gabrielle has agreed to write something on the Toxicity theme, but it would be good to hear from any of the others. Here's an extract from the email I sent out on May 29. "... we have five concentration areas, each with two or more organisers. These groups have different plans for their work, and some of those have already been posted here. If you have questions please feel free to post them to the general list. 1) Toxicity, waste, detritus -- Gabrielle Hecht and Pamila Gupta 2) Capitalism from the South -- Sharad Chari and Howard Stein 3) Global South as Idea -- Achille Mbembe, Nancy Rose Hunt and Adedamola Osinulu 4) Cultural theory from the Global South -- Sarah Nuttall, Jennifer Wenzel and Joey Slaughter 5) States from the South -- Anne Pitcher and Claire Benit-Gbaffou There was some discussion of a sixth concentration area around performance, which seems like a good thing to me." We also agreed to a schedule of events for the next few years at http://lists.wits.ac.za/pipermail/sugarman/2014-May/000097.html But it would be good to hear suggestions and plans for moving the themes forward (whatever form that will take).
