From keith at breckenridge.org.za Wed Jan 14 21:30:51 2015 From: keith at breckenridge.org.za (Keith Breckenridge) Date: Wed, 14 Jan 2015 21:30:51 +0200 Subject: [Sugarman] Call for Proposals for Workshop 3 : Public Space, Infrastructure and Informality in the Splintering City Message-ID: Dear Colleagues, After the good work of Claudia Gastrow here at Wits, and Martin Murray and Anne Pitcher at Michigan, we are ready to begin planning in earnest for the next workshop in the Michigan - Wits Collaboration. The meeting will take place in Johannesburg between May 4 and May 10. The theme of the workshop is *Public Space, Infrastructure, and Informality in the Splintering City* and it is succinctly described, including prospective sessions, here: http://wiser.wits.ac.za/page/public-space-infrastructure-and-informality-splintering-city-11660. There is a link on that page to the Google Docs form that we will be using to collect proposals for participation. All travel and subsistence expenses of those whose applications are accepted, in this case from the Michigan side, will be paid by the project. And please note that the deadline for applications is February 15, 2015. If you are keen to participate, please do not delay in reviewing the proposal and completing the form as spaces for the workshop are much more limited this time. (You should be able to find the explanation for the meeting and all the other materials from the links on the WISER website at http://wiser.wits.ac.za.) -- Keith Breckenridge *W I S E R* - The Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research, University of the Witwatersrand | Pbag 3, PO Wits, Johannesburg, South Africa, 2050 | Tel: +27117174272 | Fax: 0867654213 | Web: wiser.wits.ac.za | *Biometric State*, CUP, Sept 2014 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... These will be held in South Africa (probably Joburg, but maybe Durban) from July 7 to 14, 2016. We're likely to do Toxicity July 7 & 8, and STS July 11-14, with a free weekend in between. We thought it made sense to hold these back-to-back because we anticipate (but by no means require!) substantial overlap in the participants for the two workshops. Note that this is a change from previously made plans. Most notably, we'd originally thought about piggybacking Toxicity onto the Nov. 2015 workshop in Ann Arbor, but there ended up being too many date conflicts with professional society meetings. We'd also first planned to have STS in June 2016, but a conflict arose there too. So if you'd already marked your calendars, please change them accordingly! In the fullness of time, we'll issue separate calls for each workshop. (Of course, Toxicity already has a set of abstracts posted here. Pamila and I will send a follow-up email in due course.)
