Urgent Vacancy: Short term contract for Intern/Junior Professional Officer – Urban Biodiversity and Ecosystems

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability – Africa, which houses the global ICLEI Cities Biodiversity Center is seeking a Junior Professional Officer to fulfil a short term post of four months (March – June). This is an office based job, and does not entail any field work.

Start date: 1 March 2013

Job Specifications:
Formal qualification:
·         An M.Sc<http://M.Sc> or honours in Conservation Biology, Urban Ecology or similar (ecosystems and biodiversity             being the focus);
·         2-3 years of work experience an advantage.

Experience:
·         Grounded understanding of biodiversity, ecosystem services, biodiversity planning, and policy;
·         Strong experience and understanding of South African context;
·         Understanding of local government and urban policy and planning an added advantage;
·         Excellent written, communication and presentation skills in English;
·         Ability to follow logical and methodological approach;
·         Ability to work independently and as part of a dynamic group;
·         Computer literate (experience in ArcGIS an advantage).

Key Performance Areas:
·         Catalogue, compile and summarise urban biodiversity case studies;
·         Undertake desktop research;
·         Contribute to data capture and cataloguing of biodiversity news, data and case studies for a global           website;
·         Contribute positively to the larger work stream within the Cities Biodiversity Center.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: 19 February 17:00. Successfully shortlisted candidates will be subject to a test of competency of writing and research skills.
