Subject: [saabnet] MSc and PhD bursaries Plant Germplasm Conservation Research Group
The Plant Germplasm Conservation Research Group, at the School of Life Sciences, University of
KwaZulu-Natal (Durban, South Africa) invite applications for the following:
• 1 PhD
• 1 MSc
Over the years, this research group under the supervision of Prof. Patricia Berjak and Prof. Norman
Pammenter has vastly contributed to the understanding of recalcitrant seed physiology and
cryopreservation of such seeds. These projects will emphasise on the mechanism of action of
cathodic water in ameliorating oxidative stress in recalcitrant and/or orthodox seeds. The projects
will entail working on seed physiology, biochemistry and microscopy etc. to answer some latest
developments in seed science.
Bursaries will be awarded to the selected MSc (R40 000 per annum) and PhD (R60 000 to 80,000)
candidates. All successful applicants will be askedto register as full time students at the University of
KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa. Required training in various techniques will be provided.
Publications demonstrating suitability of the candidate to the project will be an advantage. All
