Shigella sonnei Illness Associated with International Traveling

Hello all:

In coordination with state and local health departments, CDC is investigating a cluster of 93 cases of illness caused by Shigella sonnei among residents of 29 states or territories. Cases are associated with PulseNet outbreak 1407MLJ16-2, Xbal pattern J16X01.0232. Of the 93 patients involved in this cluster, travel information is available for 54 patients. Fifty-seven percent (31/54) of patients traveled internationally before their illness. Travel destinations included the Dominican Republic or Haiti (n=19); India (n=7), and Morocco (n=2), the Russian Federation n=(1), Turkey (n=1), and the United Kingdom (n=1).   Onset dates of confirmed cases range from May 10 to December 10, 2014. Ages ranged from 1-82 years (median=34); 45% were female. Ten patients have been hospitalized; no deaths have been reported. No single source has been identified.

Nalidixic acid and/or fluoroquinolone resistance has been reported among isolates associated with this cluster.

I have included here TIFF files with the PFGE pattern and a bundle file with additional details. We appreciate if you could investigate possible matches in your databases.
