[Sugarman] Journal of African History Forum on Thompson

Dear Anne and all: 

Thanks! I think we are all happy to see some of the fruits of our collaborative work coming into publication. 

As to your question, here’s what happening in the coming year: 

The next joint conference—number 7 in our ongoing series—will be held from 22 to 30 June in Johannesburg on the theme ‘Arts, Performance and Social Justice’. The organising committee is (from Wits) Brenda Mhlambi, Donato Somma, and Neo Muyanga, (from UJ) Liz Gunner, and (from U-M) Naomi Andre, Judy Irvine, Kelly Askew. As I understand it the committee has put together a program that will include some public events in Joburg city, together with a substantive workshop in a remote place in Maropeng. 

The conference after that one—number 8—will be about museums, particularly about national museums. The plan is to involve a number of curators of national museums in Africa in the occasion. It’ll be held in Ann Arbor in latish November. The U-M planning committee is Ray Silverman, Geoff Emberling, and Laura de Becker; on the Wits side it is Cynthia Kros, Sarah Duff, and a few others.

Several projects emerging from workshops are heading toward publication: there is the _Social History_ collection that Keith mentioned; and a collection of papers on ‘Print Sociabilities’ under review in the _Historical Journal_, and I think a collection emerging from the workshop on trash and toxicity, too. 

That’s what I know!
